Just War Theory in your Dissertation Research

At a glance it seems that we live in a peaceful and democratic world. Well, perhaps peace and democracy are common for the United States or Europe or some other countries. However, the wars are still being waged, and there are places where people are got used to the constant sounds of the explosions and the bullets whistling.

The most common examples of the current wars are Iraq and Afghanistan, of course. These topics are widely discussed and investigated. Still, your dissertation research can also devoted to these issues. Particularly you can study this topic in your dissertation research from the Just War theory point of view.

Just War theory is a concept, which states that any military conflict should have to meet some religious, ethical, philosophic and political criteria. In the other words, this theory tries to explain some morality aspects of the use of armed force. And in your dissertation research you can also try to find the morality of starting two wars by the United States.

There are several criteria of the Just War theory, which give explanations of the reasons of going to war or conducting an armed conflict. Actually, the explanations are pretty simple and here are some of them.

The reason for war has to be just.

The states should start war only if all the other means of the peaceful resolution of the conflict have been used.

The states have to evaluate their chances for the success. They have to make sure that the benefits will be proportional to the possible harms.

Just War theory also states that the force should be applied only towards enemies or combatants. It is unjust to attack civilians or civilian objects.

And now, think whether the United States wage Just Wars according to the criteria mentioned above.
